Abdoulaye Bah have been an art collector for the majority of his life. As a child, he had many pieces of tribal art in his home, and as a result,Abdoulaye Bah began learning about the different tribes from which they
came. Abdoulaye Bah is from a family that would have been considered royalty prior to the independence of the French Sudan (later Mali) in 1960. Beginning at the age of 13, he was a guide for the travelers in Mali, which was considered to be a tremendous honor. French is his primary language, in addition to a number of tribal dialects, his services were most useful. In order for Abdoulaye to be a tour guide, he had to follow the African art dealers and to learn about the art from collectors and the dealers.
He also would learn about being a guide from the older tour guides. The European tourists would come to Africa and, not knowing where to go, would ask the tour guides what to do. As a guide, Abdoulaye would assist in communication with the native people of Mali and choose whatever art they wanted to buy.Abdoulaye Bah attended Primary and Secondary school in Mali for 12 years, from age 7 through the age of 19. He then attended Franco / Arab School in Timbuktu, Mali for 2 years where he studied the French and Arabic. There he studied ethnology and theology. The Malian population is more the 45 per cent illiterate, therefore he considered to be fortunate to be one of the educated.
Mr. Abdoulaye also learned the gemstone business from his father, which is what he had been doing for the entirety of his life. In 1982, after been in the clothing business for a short time, he entered the gemstone business. His business has always been conducted internationally, but he has been a collector of African Tribal Art for during that time, but has not used the African Tribal Art as my primary source of his income. For he has been more of a collector than a dealer. For
